My partner and I always joke that he sounds smarter than he is and I am smarter than I sound. He has no problem expressing his thoughts and definitely doesn't have the same social anxiety or fear of being wrong that I do. He has mastered the art of not giving a f*** and his voice is resonant and clear. Even when he sings as a joke he releases a light, open, and resonant vibrato. He is a man with an open throat chakra - clear, honest, sharp.
My words never come out right and I often say things I don't mean. Somewhere between my heart and my throat, my truth becomes scrambled. It's like there is a giant hairball in my throat that won't come out. My throat is tight and sometimes I wake up unable to inhale - my throat won't open without a little bit of force. I am a woman with a struggling throat chakra - inconsistent in my speech, fearful, paristaltic.
To be clear, I have no issue with being quiet. I am an introvert and enjoy silence, listening, and absorbing my surroundings quietly. When I do speak, though, I want to be myself in my words. And when I don't speak, I don't want it to be because I'm insecure and fearful, because I just can't spit it out.
The more I practice yoga and the more years I accumulate, the easier expressing myself clearly and honestly becomes. I have more and more moments of clarity in my speech, and consistency between my actions, thoughts and words. It gets easier through practice and because, as the saying goes, there is a point where it is harder to stay in your cocoon than it is to hatch as your true unicorn self. (That is the saying, right?)
This process is the reason I've wanted to share some mantra with you. The more I chant and meditate, the more often I find my voice, my center, and my resonance. The practice of finding stillness, moments of clear thought, and a strong, clear voice in meditation is practice towards finding it elsewhere - outside of my mat, outside of myself.
I think all chanting is good for this chakra, but I personally feel most connected to the bija mantra - ham - which is the throat chakra mantra. A bija mantra is a one-syllable sound that activates the energy of the chakra in order to bring balance to it. When you say or chant the bija mantra, you resonate with the energy of the associated chakra. So, repeating the bija mantra ham will allow to resonate with the throat chakra.
You can say it or sing it out loud on repeat. Try it. See if you can feel the vibrations in your throat.
And maybe you want to try out the other seed mantras, because maybe you have a different chakra or area that needs balance. The picture below shows the bija mantra, color, and symbol associated with each chakra. Try them all and notice where you feel them in the body.
Also, you can check out my facebook page for my other favorite mantra - OM GAM GANAPATAYE NAMAHA. This mantra calls upon the energy of Ganesh. Ganesh is the remover of obstacles (or perhaps he places them, and we remove them :)). I place a lot of obstacles in my own way, so this is an important one for me. It's also great for awakening our foundation, or root chakra, as Ganesha is also The Lord of Beginnings. Chant this to help remove perceived obstacles.
Let me know how it goes in the comments section here or on facebook!
