Since I missed yesterday, I'm talking about two herbs today. Two herbs that go together nicely to make one of my favorite decoctions for when I'm feeling hyperacidic! (see crazy herb monster face below!)
The first one is ajwain. Ajwain tastes like a peppery & more intense version of thyme. It is commonly used for indigestion. It stimulates the appetite and also increases function in the kidneys and the respiratory system. When used in a poultice it is great for migraines, and just sniffing it will help alleviate headaches. (But remember, be careful sniffin' herbs!) It is anti-inflammatory and therefore great for arthritis, aching joints, and red/itchy skin. You can just soak some seeds in warm water and soak your aching joints in it! When heated it releases thymol which can you be used as a pain-killer or to help with congestion (great for asthma and a cough). And adding a pinch of it to your rice will help add flavor and aroma to any dish you make!
Jeera, or cumin, is also great for stimulating the digestive fires. It is great for morning sickness, has anti-oxidant properties, increases the flow of mother's milk, alleviates menstrual cramps and acts as a remedy for eczema. It is balancing for all three doshas and some recent studies suggest it protects against memory loss!
I like to take 1 tsp ajwain and 1 tsp cumin boiled in a cup of water to help with acidity. Pitta dosha rears its fiery head when I over indulge in chocolate, which is often, so when this happens I'll sometimes have a little glass of this ajwain/cumin decoction to cool myself down. It's a savory, delicious and golden drink!
