I am so happy to be teaching a donation class for the 2014 PDX Yogathon to support Living Yoga ! Living Yoga brings the healing power of yoga and mindfulness into rehab facilities and prisons. And they teach over 1200 classes a year!!
What I love about the yogathon is that it is so much more than just an "athon" - it is a feel-good, community building, soul rejuvenating fundraiser for an organization that performs a much needed and appreciated service. It is a chance to revisit our faith that our yoga practice can rehabilitate the bodies and minds of us all! So what goes on during this month long affair?
1. We raise money! You can go ahead and donate OR sign up as an individual or on a team and ask others to donate to the cause - http://yogathon.living-yoga.org/ You can ask people to donate a lump sum, or maybe a certain amount for every class you take - whatever works best for you. Then spread the word! Let friends, family, and even strangers know about Living Yoga and the yogathon and ask them donate to your page. Living Yoga - one of the best nonprofits around - benefits so much from this and they in turn get to keep spreading the good work that they do! So don't be afraid to ask!
2. We build community! It is a chance to be inspired by, support, meet, and exchange ideas with all the yogis in the area. When we are all practicing for a shared purpose - it brings us together - and great things can happen when we are all feeling that love and support.
3. We go deep! It is a chance to get really focused on your personal practice. Living Yoga brings us together to set intentions and provides us with SO MANY donation classes to keep our momentum. It makes us think more deeply about why we practice yoga or what goals we might have in practicing yoga. It is that self-inquiry and drive that brings out some of the best qualities in us all. When we as individuals are at our best - then our communities can be at their best too!
So - see if your studio has a team and join! Or join as an individual. Or just donate.
Then, refresh your practice and try to go to some of the donation classes around town.
And then maybe go a little deeper. Set some goals, do some soul searching, volunteer, give back to your community, whatever "going deep" means to you.
Participate any way you can!
I can't wait for the kickoff on April 5th at Yoga Pearl. Hope to see you there!
