I so enjoyed reading "Quiet: The Power of Introverts in World that Can't Stop Talking" by the eloquent Susan Cain. I could hold up the cover, which has Quiet written out in large red writing, as a way to attempt extroversion - to say "Hey, look what I'm reading" and at the same time to scare others away while I was enjoying reading in solitude - "Quiet, can't you see I'm reading." If you consider yourself an introvert and struggle with that label - the book is extremely validating. It will make you feel good, you'll probably have a couple of a-ha moments, and you'll start seeing your daily interactions with work and friends in a whole new light. The book is also just really well-researched and full of interesting stories and studies that anybody would find fascinating.
It is the writing itself, though, not just the content that truly showcases the power of introverts. Cain, the introverted narrator, proves it with each insight that comes from her thoughtful, careful, and compassionate prose. The book doesn't just prove how valuable those with a "cerebral nature" are, but exudes love and appreciation for all types. It's about harnessing your own strengths and learning how to create balance with those who don't share your same qualities. It is, ultimately, a powerful lesson about treasuring each and every person exactly the way they are.
As an introvert, yoga teacher, and student of Ayurveda I found this book to be perfectly aligned with the attitudes I strive to have, to teach, and to somebody share with my clients. That at the core of what I see to be the best path towards health is a deep understanding and love of self as well as an awareness and respect for others. Though the book is geared towards introverts and those who manage, live with and engage with introverts (which seems like everybody, really) it is also so appropriate for anybody striving towards better personal health or a better relationship with the world at large. It really does promote appreciation for all types of people and that is a way of being that benefits everyone. Word.
